Malawi is the second largest tea producer in Africa. Giving work to over 50.000 people in the peak season. You find the estates one hour form Blantyre, between the lowlands of Mulanje and the Thyolo (pronounced “Cho’lo”) in the Shire Highlands. Tea has been grown here since early 20th century and the primly trimmed bushes (strictly, trees) give the whole area the appearance of a neatly kept but vast garden. Scenically beautiful, the estates are overlooked by the impressive Mount Mulanje. If you drive up on the fly to the gates of Tea estates you find a guard that will not let you pass. If you stop alongside the road you will attract a crowd from the workers. Some great companies can take you there for a visit such as Mulanje Adventures.
