60% of nationalities need a visa which can be obtained on arrival in Malawi . Visa on Arrival was suspended (due to Covid) as from 26 March 2020 but one can can get them still at most borders. To promote tourism 79 countries are exempt for visa apllication as of februari 2024. The exemption extends to nations that do not impose visa requirements on Malawian citizens.

The E-visa system for ythe remaining countries is enabling travelers to not only to register and fill in documents but also attach supporting documents and pay visa fees in advance, thereby streamlining and automating the visa process in advance of arrival. Make sure to take sufficient time to apply. To apply for e-visa visit https://www.evisa.gov.mw/ . In January 2020 the cost of a single entry visa to Malawi is US$50.
