Southern region intro

The Southern Region's capital is Blantyre and is Malawi’s chief commercial and light industrial centre. Blantyre is the second biggest city in the country, after Lilongwe the capital. It provides comfortable, as well as luxurious places to stay and offers wonderful restaurants, bars and other conviences. Limbe, a district of the city is the centre for wholesale commerce.  Zomba, the former Capital is a stately bustling melting pot known for fresh produce and market.

The region located mainly in the Shire Valley offers National Parks and Wildlife/Nature Reserves for experiencing and exploration as well as lovely towns and attractions.

Zomba

Zomba is a city in southern Malawi, in the Shire Highlands. Zomba was tot 1975 de hoofdstad van Malawi. The city is a bustling melting pot of farmers coming to sell their wares, vendors at the market and in the stores to important officials and businessmen. Strolling through the city therefore provides a nice glimpse into Malawi's local urban life.

One can discover tucked-away gems like King African Rifles Monument. Do head outdoors to Zomba Plateau.

Mulanje

Mulanje is a town in the Southern Region, close to the border of Mozambique. A must experience is the elevated beauty of Mount Mulanje. The mountain consists of a large, beautifully vegetated, plateau at about 2000m altitude. The twenty peaks are around 2500m and above, with the highest peak, Sapitwa Peak, shining at 3002m. The region is characterized by green tea and sugar cane plantations and traditional African villages.

Nsanje

Nsanje is the main town in Nsanje District within the Southern Region, surrounded by Mozambique on three sides.. The town is the headquarters of Malawi Railways. Nsanje is known for parks. such as Mwabvi Game Reserve and Elephant Marsh, known for Malawi’s largest populations of crocodiles, large numbers of hippos, smaller aquatic mammals such as otters, and a rich aquatic birdlife which is spectacular both in numbers and variety. Anyone interested in birdlife will be in for a treat. Fish eagles, storks, kingfishers, herons, and countless other species will be seen even on a short visit.
