La Caverna & Cafe Mandala

Nice clean place, friendly people, good food and nice drinks. Great atmosphere and very good service. You can eat outside where there is a nice breeze on a hot day. Mandala house is a fascinating historic building with a great exhibition. Local artistic creations of Blantyre at La Caverna Art Gallery, a blend between art exhibition and relaxing cafe. A quaint building in a scenic setting surrounded by trees and nature, the gallery houses a range of locally produced artworks, including landscape paintings, wood carvings of animals, rock carvings, ceramics, and traditional musical instruments. After appreciating the art, enjoy a smooth coffee around the corner from the building in the Mandela cafe. Consider purchasing one of the artworks on display; profits from the gallery go back into the artists' pockets.

Part of a national monument "The Mandala House" and perhaps more of a living museum. Built in 1882, from sun-dried grass and mud and bricks, the Old manager’s House in Mandala is the oldest European building in Malawi. Early European settlers used the house and fortified yard as a laager in times of armed conflict from the Angoni days to the Chilembwe Uprising. Defensive walls and towers extended from the main building.
