Mulanje Porters Race. July 12 in Mulanje Mountain
The 2025 edition of the Mount Mulanje Porters Race is scheduled to take place on July 12th.
The Mount Mulanje Porters Race is an annual extreme sports event held in Malawi, attracting both local and international athletes. The race covers a challenging 25-kilometer course that ascends from the Likhubula forestry station to the 2,000-meter-high Chambe Basin, traverses the mountain shelf beneath Mulanje’s highest peaks, and then descends back to the starting point.
Initially, the race was exclusive to Mount Mulanje’s porters and guides—individuals who assist tourists in navigating the mountain. Over time, it evolved into a prominent annual event open to a broader range of participants, including national athletes. The race has played a significant role in developing Malawian athletes who have gained recognition on the international stage.
The course is renowned for its technical difficulty, featuring steep ascents, rugged terrain, and rapid descents that demand exceptional agility and endurance from competitors. Despite these challenges, the event continues to draw hundreds of participants each year.
In addition to the main race, the event often includes cultural performances and celebrations, creating a festive atmosphere that highlights Malawi’s rich heritage.
