Mulanje Peaks & Rhythms Festival - Aug 30 / Sep 1, 2024
The Mulanje Peaks and Rhythms Festival is a three-day annual celebration of the unique blend of Mulanje’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and artistic talents, held in the picturesque region of Mulanje, Malawi. Scheduled to take place from August 30th to September 1st, 2024, this festival not only aims to entertain but also to promote environmental conservation, community engagement, cultural exchange and tourism in the region, while providing a platform for local and international artists. As we mark the beginning of the tourism month, we strive to create an event that resonates with both local and international audiences.
The theme for the 2024 festival is "Promoting Youth Involvement in Tourism, Reforestation, and Cultural Arts for and Peace for Environmental Sustainability," This theme underscores our commitment to nurturing young talent, protecting our natural resources, and promoting cultural heritage.
Program of Events:
Friday, 30th August 2024. – Gate Way Lodge
1. Cultural Night (4:00 PM - 7:00 PM)
• Promote the preservation and celebration of local traditions and culture.
a. Traditional Food and Drinks: Attendees should experience the rich culinary heritage of Mulanje with a variety of traditional dishes and beverages.
b. Traditional Dances: Enjoy captivating traditional dance performances from local groups.
c. Traditional Music and Performances:Immerse attendees in the sounds of local music and performances showcasing Mulanje’s cultural heritage.
d. Storytelling and Poetry: Listen to enchanting stories and poetry that reflect the traditions and history of the region.
2. Camping (8:00 PM onwards) – Gate Way Lodge
• Enhance the festival experience by providing a communal and immersive outdoor adventure.
a. Set up camp at designated areas and enjoy a night under the stars with fellow festivalgoer
Saturday, 31st August 2024.
1. Carnival and Clean-Up (8:00 AM - 11:00 AM) – Chitakale to MJ Golf Club
• Combine environmental stewardship with festive activities, raising awareness while engaging the community in fun and meaningful ways.
a. Awareness Parade: Participate in a vibrant parade with an environmental costume theme. The parade route will involve picking up litter, promoting cleanliness and environmental awareness.
2. Main Event (Fun Fair) (11:00 AM - 7:00 PM) – Mj Sports Club
• Offers a diverse range of activities that cater to different interests, making the festival inclusive and family-friendly.
a. Sporting Activities: Engage in various sports activities designed for all ages and skill levels. E.g. cycling, wall climbing, racing, Bawo, chess, weight lifting, swimming, and golf.
b. Music Performanes: Enjoy live music performances from local and regional artists.
c. Traditional Activities: Experience traditional games, crafts, and demonstrations that highlight the cultural heritage of Mulanje.
d. Kids Corner: A special area dedicated to children's activities, including games, crafts, and entertainment.
e. Art Exhibition and Tourism Fair: Explore exhibitions showcasing local art and tourism opportunities in Mulanje.
Sunday, 1st September 2024. – Dziwe la nkhalamba
• Nature Walk (8:00 AM - 1:00 PM) - Highlights the natural beauty of Mulanje, encouraging eco-tourism and appreciation for the environment
a. Sightseeing: Take in the breathtaking views and natural beauty of Mulanje.
b. Swimming: Enjoy refreshing swims in natural pools.
c. Mini Hiking: Participate in short hikes tailored to various fitness levels.
d. Zip Lining: Experience the thrill of zip lining in scenic locations.
Additional Activities:
- Artisan Markets: Throughout the festival, markets featuring local crafts, food stalls, and artisan products, supporting local entrepreneurs.
- Tourism Business Markets: Highlighting local tourism businesses and opportunities, encouraging economic growth in the region.
- Poetry and Storytelling: Celebrating the rich oral traditions of Mulanje through live performances.
